Diary of Festivals / Competitions for 2008/9:

Attached to this email is a list of all of our planned events / festivals for next academic year. Please take the time to look and the dates and maybe enter the ones that interest your school into next years diary. You could also pin this up in the staffroom so that everyone knows when things are planned to happen. We will try our best to stick to all of these dates, but one or two may change slightly!

Gifted & Talented Morning at Samuel Ward:

5 Local primary schools which would typically feed into Samuel Ward attended a Gifted & Talented PE day at Samuel Ward on Wednesday. The students were given the opportunity to take part in activities such as Gymnastics, Trampolining, and Dance. With the sessions led by local coaches and the Samuel Ward PE staff. All of the children enjoyed the morning and it gave them a chance to participate in areas not normally accessible to primary schools.

Primary Rounders:

6 teams took part in a Primary Rounders festival on Wednesday at Samuel Ward. Every child got the chance to bat and field in an adapted format of the game, and there was a noticeable improvement in both technique and teamwork as the tournament went on. After every side had played their five games the eventual winners were Burton End Primary who received the shield kindly donated by Dolland & Aitchison in Haverhill.

Tri Golf Festival Reminder:

Just a quick reminder to Westfield, Coupals, New Cangle and St Felix that the Tri Golf festival takes place on Wednesady 9th July 1-3pm at Samuel Ward.

Adam Dellar: Cricket Coach, sessions available in September:

Wake Up and Shake Up

In September, with Lottery funding, we will be launching Wake Up and Shake Up.

Wake Up and Shake Up is a selection of routines created by a West Country SSCo, Ruth Mitchell, to provide children with short energising bouts of physical activity. The routines, all done to popular music, get children moving their bodies and feeling “awake”. A small space is all that is needed- a playground if being followed by a whole school or a classroom if being done by a class. The “Wake up and Shake up” lasts about 5 minutes and can be done first thing in the morning, in assembly, following a break or whenever is convenient to schools.

Training for Wake Up and Shake Up will take place in September. During the training you will be introduced to some of the routines, shown the resources and see a group of children learning the set patterns and then improvising their own moves.

Schools who then wish to adopt Wake Up and Shape up will receive the music CD and DVD as well as a “Boogie box” to play the music on.
